It can seem (as if) there's no way out of the darkness that depression, anxiety and other mental health issues can bring. A lot of times we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget how important self-reflection and personal growth really is. Although your counselor might offer some guidance, they won't tell you what to do — they'll simply provide support while you discover solutions on your own. Open-mindedness: A good counselor should remain open-minded throughout the counseling process, avoiding judgmental attitudes or biases towards specific topics or people. Through questioning and listening, counselors can identify any obstacles or challenges that may impede the client's progress towards greater self-acceptance. (It is also helpful for the counselor to provide positive reinforcement throughout this process.)Once the underlying cause(s) of the low self-esteem have been identified, it is time for the counselor to work with the client on improving those areas of concern! For example, if a person has poor body image, the counselor might encourage them to focus on healthy nutrition habits or physical activities that will help them feel better about their appearance.
